Before, I go into the critique... I would love to say that I like this app for the quizzes, but do not go for them for news. Also, because this is a critique, I will give the pros and the cons of the entire app/website. I will not give a critique of their corresponding YouTube channel, but I will critique their actual news app.
Whenever I opened the Buzzfeed app, it immediately asked if I loved BuzzFeed and wanted to become a beta tester. This kind of confused and irritated me. Because I just downloaded the app, how would I already know if I liked it or not? I wasn't able to even enter the actual app, because this pop-up asked whether or not I liked it. Whenever I answered "ask me later", the pop-up went away and the home page appeared. Their app was well designed. The bright colors with really intriguing photos, and thumbnails made me want to click on every article.
The first page includes options such as; latest in news, pop culture, quizzes, and more. Buzzfeed is most famous for their quizzes and not news. Because of this, it kind of downgrades Buzzfeed as a news app in my mind. Also, Buzzfeed's main purpose is pop culture and celebrity news. I do agree that celebrity news and pop culture are both types of news. However, for some reason in my mind, when I think of news- I always think of serious hard-hitting news pages such as CNN and Fox, which Buzzfeed does not compare to. Another complaint that I had with Buzzfeed, and honestly this could apply to every news app, would be their overall biased writing. I know that every news app does this, I just feel that if I didn't mention it, then this post would not be a full critique. Buzzfeed is quite biased with its views leaning more on the democratic side of things. But, honestly, this would be a point of lower substance, because like I mentioned earlier, every news app is biased (Fox- republican, CNN-democrat, etc...).
Overall, I don't hate this app, but I wish the app would give me more. Because, I have used this app for many years for their quizzes, I really wanted them to test well on their news too. I really like their brand, but I do have high standards for them and would like for them to do better.
